Poems on Existence

Poetry by Sri Chinmoy

If everything that the world has
Disappears and never returns,
Then why should we live on fruitless reminiscence-life?
If the life dies and never blossoms again,
Then why enter into this world?
I was quiet satisfied in the higher world
Where I was formless and was alone.

Is there no greater purpose
For your existence
Than mere thinking and brooding?

O formless One,
Alone You were.
Why have you become many?
Why?
What motivated You to grow
Into many forms and shapes?
Why have you created
Murmuring rivers and thick forests
And wild wind?
Why, why?
Why have you created teeming fears,
Ailments countless?
Why, why?
Why does Mother Earth untiringly cry?
Just for a short time
We enter into the world-arena and depart.
We know not why.
But the hope of oneness
Permeates our entire existence.

What is life
If not a longing for
The blossoming of an opportunity
To become an integrally perfect man?

I am the creation of my own illusion and delusion.
O Lord, do tell me who I really am.
Why do I cherish in vain hundreds of desires?
Alas, all my heart's excruciating pangs and I
Have become inseparably one.
O Lord, do tell me who I really am.

If you want to know the ultimate Truth,
Then go beyond the human mind.
If you want to live in the ultimate Truth,
Then embody permanently
A soulful consciousness.
If you want to become the ultimate Truth,
Then increase your love for your soul,
Increase your faith in your soul
And
Increase your oneness with your soul.

Wait and see.
The temporary emptiness
Of not discovering
The answer of life
Cannot last,
For the Answer itself
Is blossoming
Petal by petal
For you.

I see myself
As I am.
God sees me
As what I can ultimately become.
