Integral Happiness

Excerpts from Sri Chinmoy’s book – Happiness

To get happiness
You do not have to wait for your life to end.
Lust look for it in the right place.
The right place
Is your self-giving heart.

We do not get joy because the world is full of chaos. Who has created this chaos? You and I. It is we who are to be blamed. When our body only sleeps, we create chaos. But if we use our body to serve God in man, if we use our vital to inspire others, if we use our mind to illumine others, then we are bound to get joy.

God has made one promise to us and that promise is that He will give us His Joy. Right now we enjoy false happiness in the body, vital mind and heart. The body enjoys happiness in the world of pleasure and lethargy. The vital enjoys happiness in the world of aggression. The mind enjoys happiness when it treasures insecurity. But there comes a time when real happiness, divine happiness, dawns. At that time the body is fully awake and consciously offering its service-light, the vital is dynamic, the mind is calm and quiet and the heart feels its inseparable oneness with the rest of the world.

We have two main instruments: the mind and the heart. The mind finds it difficult to be happy, precisely because the mind consciously enjoys the sense of separativity. It is always judging and doubting the reality in others. This is the human mind, the ordinary physical mind, the earth-bound mind. But we also have the aspiring heart, the loving heart. This loving heart is free from insecurity, for it has already established its oneness with the rest of the world. This heart carries the message of self-offering, and self-offering is God-discovery.

O my mind,
Do you really want me to be happy?
Then stop, stop thinking!

O my heart, Do you really want me to be happy?
Then start, start feeling!

Do you want to be happy?
Then do not overestimate
The power of your mind,
And do not underestimate
The light of your heart.

~ Sri Chinmoy

The mind wants to convince us of certain realities, but when we dive deep within, we see that the mind is totally wrong. Real happiness we will never get by listening to the mind. The mind thinks it knows the truth, but unfortunately it does not.

Three ways to happiness:
Starve your doubting mind,
Feed your aspiring heart,
Admire your serving life.

You will find no joy in your mind-cave,
No matter how many times a day you enter it.
Joy is where your loving heart is.
Joy is where your strong life is.

How I wish to be happy today!
O my vital,
At least for one day
Do not discourage others.
O my mind,
At least for one day
Do not critise others.
O my heart,
At least for one day
Do not emphasise the negative forces
In others.

I am happy
Because my mind
Has forgotten how to calculate.

I am happy
Because my heart
Has forgotten how to hesitate.

I am happy
Because my life
Always knows how to tolerate.

~ Sri Chinmoy

There is a special way to become happy. If we know how to follow the inner guidance, then we can really be happy. This guidance comes directly from the soul. The moment we get a message from the soul or hear its voice, we get an inner thrill.

Whether we succeed or fail, we have an inner joy. This joy does not make us want to dominate the world; rather, it makes us feel our oneness with the world. With this joy we can enter into others’ hearts and help them to lead a better and higher life.

Are you casting about
For true happiness in life?
If so, yield not to reason,
Yield not to fate,
But yield only to the dictates
Of your Inner Voice.

Anyone who will listen to the soul,
Will see a new future
Blossoming in the heart
Of his tomorrow’s happiness.

My heart is teaching me
How to be pure.
My soul is teaching me
How to be happy.

Today I shall make myself
Supremely happy.
Like the morning-sun,
I shall flood my body
With compassion,
I shall flood my vital
With concern,
I shall flood my mind
With simplicity,
And I shall flood my heart
With purity.

~ Sri Chinmoy

We know that there is a great difference between pleasure and joy. The human world, the outer consciousness, is crying for pleasure; and each time pleasure is fulfilled, we see that frustration looms large in pleasure. But, each time we cry for joy, inner joy, we run towards fulfilment. When we meditate for five minutes, we get inner joy. This joy grows into more joy. Inner joy wants us only to fulfil God; and only by fulfilling God can we be really fulfilled. Our human desires will never be totally fulfilled. They must be transcended. Desire does not have the capacity to free us. That which has freedom can eventually free us.

If we accept the life of aspiration, sooner or later fulfilment is bound to come. If we follow the road of aspiration, then even if we get just an iota of peace, light and bliss, we shall feel a sense of fulfilment. When our aspiration is built up, we get light, peace and bliss in infinite measure and feel total satisfaction and fulfilment in our lives.

When we notice that somebody is cheerful and happy, immediately we come to the conclusion that he is indulging himself. But that is totally false. Indulgence and happiness are two different things. Indulgence comes from the undivine part of us. When we are really happy, the divine in us, the infinite in us, is treasuring something and enjoying something.

In this world we are attached to the body, to the mind, to the vital and to the heart. Why? Because we want to possess. Unfortunately we forget that there is nothing on earth that we can possess forever, or even for a long time. But if we live in the soul, then we are in the Eternal and for the Eternal.

In the world of attachment we see temptation. Temptation is the difference between what we want to possess and what we have right now. From temptation frustration comes immediately. The malady of this world is unhappiness. This unhappiness can only be removed by love, the divine love, not human love. Human love binds us, but divine love transforms our consciousness.
