Sri Chinmoy - the visionary
Seldom do you hear of people who achieve so much in one lifetime, rarer still are those who seek no applause, fame or gratification for their endeavours, except in the long traditions of enlightened souls’ from the subcontinent of India. Sri Chinmoy is one such person, humble, slight in stature yet powerful in vision and achievements. Yet Sri Chinmoy would say that he is not the doer, merely the instrument for a higher purpose.
This simple God-loving and God-serving man serves all of humanity by his tireless example. His inspiration is to show us all that we can achieve so much in one lifetime. That if we pray and meditate and become one with our boundless inner energy, our newly discovered capacity transcends the doubts and limitations of the physical mind.
So focused is Sri Chinmoy’s meditative connection with this boundless inner energy God, or as he calls it his Inner Pilot, that he has followed its daily inspirations for almost the entire of his seventy-five years.
Born in a humble mud-brick cottage home in India and now residing in New York, Sri Chinmoy is the embodiment of the boundless capacity of the human spirit, expressed through music, art, literature, athletic achievement, poetry and humanitarian aid. Here is the legacy of a man who sees humanity as one, members of a global family inspiring each other while living and working harmoniously together with respect, tolerance and good-will.
How is it that one person with such a noble vision, who is highly respected by heads of state, politicians, religious and spiritual leaders and prominent luminaries, community leaders, sporting personalities and musicians can achieve so much? As a meditator Sri Chinmoy has the illumined awareness of not being restricted by the negative influences of the physical mind. Inspired only by the compassion, hope, enthusiasm and willingness of the spiritual heart. When bound by doubt, fear, hesitancy and unwillingness the human body is reduced to a mere shadow of its true self. But when one is inwardly focused and free and receptive to the higher spiritual energies within, there is no goal that is unachievable.
Through history we have seen individuals who have pushed past the known, embarked on the seemingly impossible, created new opportunities for themselves with determination and patience, have not been detracted by the negatives, felt inspired to pursue a dream and seen its reality. This is Sri Chinmoy striving also to fulfil humanity's ultimate dream of a united and harmonious world. He believes this is our ultimate challenge and destiny, one that will require changes on many levels, both personal and international, but a dream that will see a lasting reality.
His daily inspiration is tirelessly directed to this one goal for he says that through constant transcendence of our limitations, “individuals will develop a heart inundated with compassion, with an inseparable oneness for the rest of the world.” Then the goal of harmony shall expand in ever-widening circles from individual to individual, from nation to nation. Only then will humanity have reached its ultimate dream and divine destiny.
